The Wedding Moment I love (and why pre-ceremony photographs are so great)

I thought I would share this moment I’ve seen happen at my recent weddings.  It’s totally cool, totally fun and a perfect way to send the couple down the isle.  No real way to plan for it but I think its a moment that every bride and groom would remember as one of the hight points of the day.  This happens when the formal photos are done  and the bridal party is gathered in what every room they got ready in. The energy in the room is great, everyone is relaxed and excited and the bride and groom feel so supported.  Just naturally some form of group huddle takes place.  This is a perfect time for a toast, like what happened here:

And if there are no drinks handy, then the spontaneity still takes over:

Point is, that these are awesome moments that I wish every bride and groom could experience.  Interesting thing is that I’ve only seen these happen when the first look and the formal photographs are done before the ceremony.  Something about being together and taking the photos breaks the nervous energy of the day, allowing people to connect and really be with each other.  This is one of the reasons that I suggest doing the formal wedding photographs before the ceremony.  It just sets up the day for an even greater number of amazing moments.

I know this doesn’t go over with everyone so let me know what you think in the comments below.

Engagement Photography – perfect for visiting San Francisco

This session combined two of my favorite topics – people getting engaged and people visiting San Francisco.  Marc and Leng were visiting from Singapore and want some engagement photographs in our fair city.  I love working with people visiting San Francisco because it reminds me how amazing our city really is.  I’ve said this more then once but people will save up their life savings to visit San Francisco for a week and it will be the trip they talk about for the rest of their lives.  And while they are here visiting and having the time of their lives, most of us are pissed off about something like a bad cup of coffee, a crowded muni bus or someone cutting us off on the Golden Gate Bridge.  Guess it’s all a matter of perspective.

Marc and Leng and I spent time walking in Union Square, chasing Cable cars and shivering in the fog at Baker Beach.  They were great and totally up for anything.  Most memorable moment was putting them on a cable car and chasing them up the hill with two cameras and a backpack.  I took a few photos and then started laughing when I heard another passenger say “Run, Forest. Run!”

Congrats Marc and Leng.   Best of luck with the wedding and I hope to see you again.

Dudley Family Photographs in Golden Gate Park

I’ve known the Dudley family for three or four years.  They lived a few blocks away in San Francisco’s NOPA district and we would see each other from time to time at the various neighborhood events put on by the NOPA Parents group.  Their kids are beautiful and they were always super nice.  So I was excited when they asked me over for a family photo sessions but then I was a bit bummed when I learned that this was bon voyage event as they were leaving San francisco for a job in Texas the next week.  I was honored of course to be part of their list of “things we have to do before leaving San Francisco” but I was sad to leave them leave.  We took a few photos at their home and then moved down to Golden Gate Park (or at least the Pan Handle section).  The kids were so cute and made great pictures at their home and their park.  Always love photo sessions where the children start of a bit nervous and then quickly take to being photographed.

Best luck of Dudley Family.  Have fun and Texas and hope to see you again soon.

San Francisco City Hall Wedding – Marichris and Patrick

Marichris and Patrick had an amazing wedding at San Francisco’s Hall.  Most of the time I photograph the bride and groom at City Hall and then maybe at a few locations afterwards.  This time I met them at the San Francisco Marriott and we go all the getting ready photographs that usually come with a larger wedding.  Have to say it made for a great time.  Marichris got even more beautiful as she progressed through the getting ready process and it’s always fun to see a groom go through the various stages of nervousness, pride and excitement.  Their room had a deck with an amazing view and that made for a perfect first look location.  Then we took a limo to City Hall and there, their family trickled in until we filled the entire hallway.  Never had seen quite so many people there.  The wedding went well and the photos were just beautiful.  San Francisco’s City Hall is always amazing and is a great place for photographs.

Best of Luck Marichris and Patrick.  You are going to have quite the amazing year.

Redwood City Wedding – Leigh Anne and John

This summer I spent a wonderful day in July photographing Leigh Anne and John as they were married (after a short courtship of 18 years) at fabulous backyard wedding ceremony in Redwood City (about 20 miles south of San Francisco if you don’t know).  Leigh Anne wore a beautiful vintage dress and John had a jacket enough details to make any bride jealous.  The ceremony took place in a friend’s back yard.  The ceremony was short and sweet and I don’t think I’ll ever forget the passing of the whisky bowl.  The grandparents had no problem of course of one and the whiskey flowed.  But the moment of the day was seeing a young lady’s (maybe about 13) face contort as she sipped from the whiskey bowl and felt the burn of the fiery liquid.  Lots of laugh and made the afternoon.

The reception as at the beautiful San Mateo History Museum in downtown Redwood City.  Definitely a place worth checking out if you haven’t been there yet.  The rotunda made a great place for the reception and dancing.  And the museum exhibits were a blast to explore.  The highlight of the evening was a wonderful show put on by Leigh Anne’s belly dancing troupe.  Leigh Anne told me about it and I figured it was just a few ladies doing something for fun.  Well there was definitely a few ladies and they were definitely having fun but wow they were way more amazing then I expected.  It was a show at a level well above anything I expected.  Pretty amazing and so much fun to watch.

All in all, a great day.  Congrats Leigh Anne and John and best wishes in the next 18 years.

Our Wedding Vows on our Anniversary

7 years ago today, Sue and I said these vows to each other. I have to say that more then anything else from our wedding, I’m most proud of these vows. They are like our constitution. And like the more famous constitution, they did not come easily but when they did they really made a difference. I like them not because I live up to them everyday but because they help guide me in those moments when I don’t want to live up to them. We pull them out from time to time but the thought of them is with me always.

“I Sue/Joey, take you Joey/Sue to be my husband/wife.
I promise to honor, cherish and adore you.
I promise to laugh and play with you…to respect and believe in you.
I promise to live my life to the fullest and bring passion and adventure to our marriage.
I promise to work through the challenges and difficulties that lie ahead.
I promise to create a safe place where we can let down our guard and be vulnerable…
…and I know that we’ll make a difference in the world, not by being perfect but by being ourselves.
I promise to continue our love affair and grow in ways our relationship will require.
I promise to be your friend and partner…to trust and forgive you.
And I promise to love you – even when you forget how amazing you are – so that when my one precious life comes to an end, we’ll both say this was the best thing we ever did.”

How my photography and business are evolving

In the past couple month’s I’ve really started to think about my work and what I love about photography. Most photographers would say its something about the ability to share one’s vision with the world. I would agree and those thoughts took me back to the moment that I thought I could be a photographer. It was before Lucius was born and I walked into a friend’s house as saw a photo of a boy that I found engaging and different then your average children photos. Took me a few moments to realize that I was looking at one of my photos. That was the first time I saw my work displayed at someone’s house. That was the moment that I thought I had something interesting to offer as a photographer.

I say this because I’ve realized that photos achieve an entirely different level of impact and significance once they are printed and displayed. I had actually looked that the photo of our friend’s son many times on my computer but never “hey – I might have a career at this”. It wasn’t until I saw it live and in color that it meant something to me.

This made me realize that what I love about photography isn’t so much the photo but actually creating art for people’s homes. There is nothing better then delivering a picture to a client and seeing their faces light up as they hang their canvas or thumb through their album.

This is impacting how I approach my sessions. Now when I work with clients my goal is to create images that they will be displayed in their homes and become part of their family’s legacy. Of course some people simply need images for holiday cards or announcements which is absolutely ok, but my personal goal is to capture something that they will love to hang on their walls. I’m also using software to show people exactly how images will look in their home or office. So now I can help clients determine the perfect image, material and size for a specific spot it their home. All of my wedding packages include albums so that my couples can experience their day for years to come. And I’ve created ordering specials where I basically include digital copies in the price of prints and albums.

My goal now isn’t so much to take great photos but to create family art for homes. Much harder to do of course but so much more valuable for valuable to my clients and rewarding for me.

A few images that are now hanging in homes right now…

What should we name their wedding movie?

Leigh Anne and John had one of the most fun weddings I had ever been to. A simple, sweet backyard complete with whiskey for everyone followed up by great food and dancing at the San Mateo Historical Museum in Redwood City (just south of San Francisco if you don’t know). Then when I didn’t think it could get any better, an amazing belly dancing troupe enchanted the crowd with moves that are simply beyond words.

And now I need your help. With the magic of photoshop, we can make the Fox theater (which is right across the street from the museum), announce Leigh Anne and John’s movie. I’m looking for suggestions for the movie. Leave your suggestion(s) in the comments below. The winning title will be immortalized in the wedding photo.
