2010 San Francisco Help Portrait Team (at least a few of them).

Many more photos here.

Last Saturday December 4, 2011, 75 San Francisco photographers, videographers, make up artists and generally good people volunteered their time and talents to deliver professional quality photographs to families and individuals at the Visitation Valley Community Center (southern part of San Francisco).  In just over 4 hours we photographed over 250 people (about a 100 families/groups).  This was part of a world wide Help Portrait day.  The final numbers from the cumlative efforts are quite staggering:

  • 7,015 volunteers
  • 3,559 photographers
  • 54,526 portraits
  • Events happened in 46 countries and 47 U.S. states.

So many people contributed to the success of the events in San Francisco:

Photographers and Volunteers (apologies if I missed anyone):

All in all a most awesome event.  Thanks to everyone for their efforts big and small.  Put down Dec 3, 2011 for the next world wide Help Portrait event and keep an eye out for a San Francisco one in July.

Grand Opening of the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail exhibit

Last week I was invited to photograph the grand opening of the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail exhibit in Martinez. This exhibit depicts the 1775 journey of 240 Spanish colonists that traveled 1,200 miles from the Presidio of Tubac (Arizona) to Alta California (San Francisco). It was a great time with speakers from the National Park Service, the John Muir Association, and local politicians. But the real fun was for the families and kids who go to make adobe bricks, rope “cow”s, build straw dolls, and dance with the Calicanto Singers.

Traci’s North Beach Birthday Party

My friend Kate is one of those people that you don’t have to know very long or see very often to be close with. She is just a good person and always upbeat no matter what she has going on in her world (and with two kids and a crazy commute, she has lots going on). So when she said that she was organizing a birthday party for a good friend of hers and needed a photographer I jumped at the chance. We had a blast at Vicoletto and a very cool un-named bar in North Beach. Traci’s family had flown into San Francisco from Maryland so there was great energy all around. Turns out Traci and I have a good group of mutual friends and it was fun seeing them.

Happy Birthday Traci and thanks to Kate for letting me be apart of the festivities.

SmugMug Help Portrait Event – Huge success and bigger smiles

Last Wednesday was definitely one of the more amazing days of my life. I, along with Shelly Waldman, the amazing team from the Salvation Army and a seriously dedicated crew of photographers from the San Francisco Smugmug User Group, conducted a “Help Portrait” session with 120+ families and individuals that were in an addiction recovery program. This was inspired by the help-portrait movement and was a great example of how precious a good photograph can be and what can be accomplished by a dedicated group of people. The clients were treated to hair and make up from the amazing team from Image Provocateur, then did a 20 minute portrait session at one of 6 stations and afterwards received two 5×7 prints (delivered by Mr. K and Big Mike). Everyone, clients, volunteers and photographers alike, had huge smiles. It was pretty amazing.

Summed up well by the program director:

“I would like to thank all of you for the amazing event yesterday at Harbor Light. The clients and staff feel that this a fantastic experience and we are so glad to have been a part of it. The clients loved their photos and are carrying them around still and sharing the…m with each other. Not only was this a great self-esteem builder for our clients but it also was a great bonding experience for them as well. One client mentioned to me this morning that this event brought him together with other clients he had never really interacted with.”

You can see lots of photos of clients here.

Note: These photos are a collection from other photographers

This list of participants was compiled by Rendy Lai (and definitely doesn’t include everyone that helped)

AIDS Life Cycle 2010 – a Family affair

Wow – well we are back from LA, smiling with chapped lips and resting sore legs.  If you don’t know, my mom and I participated in the AIDS Life Cycle and road our bikes from San Francisco to LA.  That is 545 miles of beautiful, hot, dusty, and windy California terrain.  We rode with 1900 riders and 500 roadies (the insane volunteers that set up and take down our moving city).  We camped out every night, sleeping in a large tent “grid” with hundreds of other tents, showering in fabulous “shower” trucks, and eating bottomless meals in large mess tents.

Overall it was a great time and something I don’t think either of us will forget anytime soon.  Far too many memories to write down, but here are a few highlights:

  • I went camping with Lucius on the Tuesday before the ride.  Another awesome time of course, but something I started to regret a bit when a few days later and just a day before the ride I started to see the wet, itchy boils of poison oak.  Poison Oak and I don’t get along so I rushed to a doctor for steroid pills and Zanfel – a crazy expensive ointment that works wonders.  Fortunately the PO dried up but I had a scar under my chin for week.
  • Mom and I road the first 6 miles on Day 1 together.  Fortunately the roads were closed to traffic so it made that part of the ride much, much nicer then last year.
  • Day 1 was tough again with lots of nervous energy and everyone trying to get their legs going.
  • Mom made it all the way to Santa Cruz except for a little help up the 92 hill.  While going to sleep she said that she didn’t think she could ride the next day.  I said OK – but let’s just see what happens tomorrow.  She road everyday and we had this conversation every night.
  • Day 2 – 107 miles – best part was a smokin tail wind from about 30 miles during the middle of the ride and otter pops with the water stop “otters”.  This morning is special to me because I love seeing the green strawberry fields against the gray skies.  Its really beautiful.  Mom got a big kick out of hearing the evening speaker mention us as one of the family teams riding this year.  She didn’t miss a meeting after that.
  • Day 3 – quad buster and Bradly – just a hard day with a big hill in the morning and long, hot lonely roads in the afternoon.  My fashion future changed on this day since my riding glasses blew apart about 5 miles from camp.  Nothing in the camp store fit my rather large noggin so I found myself picking up some cool “cop shades” from AM/PM.  Oddly enough I received more compliments about these glasses then any pair of glasses I’ve ever owned.  Greg and I made our second annual trek for Pizza and Beer into Paso Robles.
  • Day 4 – my favorite riding day. Two large hills, with a long downhill to the coast, more rolling hills and the fastest tail wind of the ride for the last 7 miles into camp.  All on really nice road.  Last year I crashed on this day so I was happy to make camp safe and sound.  Mom had mechanical problems and had to stop early but not before getting over the “evil twins” so she was really happy.
  • Day 5 – Red Dress Day / A tale of two winds – RDD started off great with mild weather and just beautiful roads through wine country leading into the “Dainish’ town of Solvang.  I road with my friend John from Hawaii and we had a great time.  But then the route turned into the wind.  Rumors had it that the wind on that day was the strongest that anyone had ever seen.  I can’t confirm that but I can say it was soul-crushing strong.  It was brutal – about 30 miles of 20 mph+ headwinds.  And these weren’t gusts but consistent, relentless winds.  Everyone came into camp tired and very grumpy.  I didn’t have the legs to stay with John and a couple other riders so spent way too miles alone in wind on that day.  Very glad to get to camp.
  • Day 6 – This was a new day for me since last year we were rained out last year.  85 miles along the coast from Lompoc to Ventura.  I met up with Mike and Jeanette.  I knew Mike from a training ride in April and Jeanette was rock star fast so we had a great time working together until Lunch.  Unfortunately I started to get sick that day and had some seriously dark moments after lunch.  Ice cream at Paradise Pit in Santa Barbara seemed to help and I finished well.  Pizza and Beer with Greg and mom in Ventura hit the spot and candle light vigil was awesome again.
  • Day 7 – last day.  I decided to ride with mom to make sure she made it to the finish line.  She had done really well all week and I knew crossing the finish line would be a great experience for her.  The day is short (61 miles) and relatively easy but after all those miles everyone was tired and every mole hill felt like a mountain.  But we road consistently and didn’t break too long.  And good thing we didn’t.  We finished about 30 minutes before they closed the course.  Pretty amazing to see all those people cheering for us in LA.  Plus Ellen (my mom’s partner) was there to meet us so we had the added benefit for seeing a friendly face in the crowd.  Mom was overwhelmed by the cheers and the fact that she road so many miles that day (and that week).  Definitely a wonderful moment.

We returned to San Francisco sunburned, exhausted, sore, tired and ready for a real bed.  But we were in good spirits and can only look at this week with fond memories.  Thanks to everyone that helped us along the way with money and positive support.  We raised $10k for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and had an amazing experience.  An incredible week for sure.

Magnificent Mehr’s First Birthday

On Memorial Day Monday, I had the good fortune of attending Mehr Yadav’s first birthday.  Super cute little girl and she looked fabulous surrounded by her wonderful family and a slew of friends.  There were so many cute little children at the party.  I felt like a kid in a candy store – every where I turned there was an amazing set of little eyes or a great smile.  Mom (Ashima) and Dad (Manoj) did a great job of getting the party set up and taking care of the guests.  We were at the Pier 40 community room in San Francisco.  I had never been there before but it was a really nice spot for a party – a nice room looking out on the yacht club and a playground next door.  And speaking of the playground, I think big brother Sumaer spent most of the party showing the little ones the best places to play.     He definitely had all the jump moves.

Thank Yadav Family – I had a great time and it was fun to meet you and so many of your friends.  Congrats on getting number 2 to 1 year.  That is no small feat for sure.

Nopa Block Party 2010

I think it’s fair to say that NOPA (or north of the pan handle) is one of the hippest neighborhoods in San Francisco right now. Not only is the plethora of bars and restaurants in the area packed almost every night but also there is an incredibly strong community atmosphere in the neighborhood. There is Nopa Little Ones for families, Nopa Networking and Nopa+ for business minded folks, and the quarterly art walks along Divisadaro for all the creative types. It is a very cool place to be. And in looking back, I’d have to say the longest running community event and catalyst for all the coolness in NOPA has been the Nopa Block Party. I don’t know the origins but I imagined it started off with a bunch of families thinking about a BBQ with a place for the kids to play and where the parents could have a beer or two . And now after 5 years there is a title sponsor (thank Bonnie), an amazing organizer (thanks Candace), two jumpy houses, animals to pet, bands, food, vendors and a slew of children, families and other rabble-rousers. Simply put a great neighborhood party.

Great to see everyone and congrats – not only for throwing another great party but also for being the people that made NOPA so cool.

A few shots below and the full gallery here. Since there are photos of children, I’ll post the password to Nopa Parents. And, I was there until 12-ish. Sorry if I missed you.

Happy Faces at the Larkspur Hotel

Saturday was the grand re-opening of the Larkspur Hotel in Mill Valley (which is just North of San Francisco in Marin).  The hotel as been completely renovated and looks great.   Kristin Slye from Slye Marketing organized a kids and family party prior to the swanky pool side party.  Kristin, besides being a fabulous marketing person is also a friend of mine and she asked me to photograph the families.  I said yes without knowing how cool it would be.  Not only did she have local kid celebrating and performer Enzo playing, but she also brought in Princess Lanie who is one of the most talented face painters I’ve ever seen.  I met Lanie a few months back at a birthday party in Bernal Heights.  She was amazing then and equally amazing on Saturday.  She worked for two plus hours strait non-stopped turning little faces into cats, dragons and super heros.  Definitely made for many happy children and a slew of nice party portraits.

Great work Kristen and congrats to everyone at the Larkspur Hotel.  And to all the families, I tried to photograph most of the children that attended but I’m sure I missed quite a few.  Apologies in advance if I missed your little one.
