Jenny’s Golden Gate Birthday Photographs (Thanks Imani!)

Imani called me last month to set up a surprise birthday shoot for her wife Jenny.  If you have read any of my past posts, you know that I am a huge fans of married couples doing photo sessions because they always (and I mean always) brings back the romance in a very cool way.  Of course, surprise sessions are always a bit nerve racking because so much of my work is about the relationship I have with my clients.  Fortunately Jenny is fabulous and we connected from the get go.  We wandered around Crissy Field and the area near the Golden Gate Bridge.  It was another foggy San Francisco summer day but it was still beautiful and they looked great.  So wonderful to see two people that comfortable together.

Thanks Imani and Jenny.  Really enjoyed meeting you and look forward to seeing you again.

Photographs of the Wonderful Woolway Family

Last Month I had the joy of photographing the Woolway Family – Anne, Mark, Audrey and baby Henry.  And when you look through these photos, you’ll probably have the same question as I did when we first met in the Marina district home – “I see mom, Dad and Henry – now where is his big sister Audrey?”  Turns out Audrey is their little doggy and she is very much a member of the family.  Audrey is super cute and just great with Henry.  Seeing them all together, you have no doubt that Audrey was the original child and loved by all.  We got a few wonderful shots of Henry in the house (I love ones with him on the red airplane and in his pen of toys.  And since the Woolway’s had only recently moved back to San Francisco, we went out to the Golden Gate bridge to get a few classic San Francisco Photographs.

Thanks Anne and Mark  – welcome to back San Francisco and congrats with your beautiful baby.  Hugs and Kisses to Audrey.

Anne and Tobias’s Honeymoon Photographs in San Francisco

Anne and Tobias are honeymooning in San Francisco and Tobias’s cousin hired me for a photo session as a wedding present (such a great idea BTW).  Little did I know this would turn into an adventure.  I met them at their hotel and we talked about the various San Francisco options.  Turns out they wanted to do an engagement style session so they were dressed up and looking good.  The sun was just breaking through the morning fog so we decided to head out to Crissy Field and the Golden Gate Bridge.  We stopped about half way down Crissy Field when we say the bridge just peaking through the fog. We got a couple nice shots and then headed back to the car to move closer to the bridge.  But Arg!! I left the hazard lights on and the battery died.  Plus it died so much that the car wouldn’t even start when we hailed down someone for a jump.  I was freaking out of course but they were super cool about it all and and we did all we could do – walk to the bridge and take more photos.  And in another twist of fate, we ended up getting access to a pier and a building along the bay that I’ve never seen open.  We had fun and Tobias and Anne were just the awesome couple. They were even smiling when they were getting on a bus to go back to the hotel (and yes I did offer to pay for a cab but they wanted to ride the bus).

Anne and Tobias – my apologies for letting the car die but in the end I think it work out way better than expected. Best wishes with your new life together and have a great honeymoon.

P.S  in the strangest of all – I walked back to my car and it started on the first try.  Very spooky.

Carl raises the engagement bar wayyyy high

Carl is either a man among men or a glutton for punishment.  I have never hear of a man do what he did before she said yes.  He hired Devoted Catering to set up an amazing Bedouin tent on Crissy field and serve a fabulous multi-course meal complete with drinks, wine and champagne.  The tent literally looked like a palace on the hill.  The sky was the standard San Francisco Summer Gray and it was cold but no matter.  They had a near perfect view of the Golden Gate Bridge and because it was so cold there was no one on Crissy Field so they must have felt like the only two people in San Francisco.

Carl set all this up prior to asking Michelle to marry him.  That is living on the edge.  I wasn’t there but the story goes that he proposed to her under the Golden Gate Bridge and they walked back to this amazing dining experience.  It was incredible and my hat goes off to him.  Of course, if that is the starting point, I can’t imagine what he will have to do going forward.

Great job Carl – you the man.  And Congrats to you Michelle – seams like you will have a very fun wedding.

P.S.  How I came to this story is rather interesting.  I wrote about it here.

Heidi and Gucci’s Baker Beach Portraits

I met Heidi and her fabulous little dog Gucci out at Baker Beach on a rather cold and foggy summer afternoon in San Francisco.  I wasn’t worried about the gray, flat light  (that actually works really well for portraits) but I couldn’t help feeling worried about little Gucci.  Heidi said his shaking was because he was nervous but I figured it was because his little body just couldn’t generate enough heat.  Gucci was shaking so much that I had increase my shutter speed just to get him in focus.   Heidi wasn’t worried so we just kept going.  Heidi wanted photos to celebrate her birthday and to share with her family.  Once we got past the initial nervousness Heidi just settled in and we got some really nice photographs.  I especially like the ones in the Baker Beach trees.  Those trees are quickly becoming one of my favorite places to shoot.  They are just so strong, twisted and hobbit-like (if that is word).  I think Heidi looks very cool in them.

Thanks Heidi.  I had a great time and send my love to Gucci.

Kari and Long Engagement Photos at Baker Beach

Kari and Long are getting married in less then a month.  How cool is that?  They needed a few photographs for their guest book so we met out at Baker Beach a few nights ago.  I always love meeting people that are just straight up nice.  We walked around in the woods for a while and spent some time on the beach.  I don’t think people realize how nice the Baker Beach tree line is for photos.  Lots of twisted trees makes for nice lines and shadows.  We all laughed together and we tromped through the woods.  They were great and the photographs came out well.

Kari and Long – I wish you the very best with your wedding.  I can’t wait to hear how it goes.

Tattoos and Rings at Baker Beach

This was a great engagement session. I was driving up to Baker Beach thinking I would love to meet a couple interested in photos in places other than the beach with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. Baker Beach is amazing in a million different ways but I’ve been thinking there must be other shots than that classic shot. When Hayley, Lake and I met in the parking lot there had to be several hundred people on the beach along with 6 or 8 photographers and their engagement/wedding couples. Hayley and Lake didn’t bat an eye when I suggested we walk through the woods and let the crowds clear out. They were awesome and we got some amazing shots. And that was even before Lake took his shirt off for a few ring shots. I’m sure they are going to be one seriously good looking couple on their wedding day and day will be one memorable hooten-any(sp?).

Thanks Hayley and Lake. I had a great time and wish you the very best with the wedding. If you need someone to take a few photos in New Zealand let me know so I can get a baby sitter.

Baxter Clan at Ft Baker – great family tradition

Take one part very cool aunt and two parts good looking brothers just going into and just leaving college and you have the makings for a very fun tradition.  That’s what I had with the Baxters Crew – Jen and her nephews Jordan and Spencer.  They wanted to renew their tradition of taking photographs together to give to Jen’s brother/the boy’s dad.  Our original plan was to do a Baker Beach session but that was foiled by the lovely San Francisco summer fog.  So we all piled into Jordon’s car (I think he caller her “Silver” but I’m not entirely sure) and went over the Golden Gate Bridge to Ft. Baker.  The fog was still there but it made for nice light.  Once we took a few test shots, they started to relax and literally jumped for joy.  Of course the brothers had to complete on who had the best jump which made everything even more fun.  You can definitely see the love that this family has for each other.  I don’t work with that many families with older siblings so this was a real treat.

Thanks Jen, Jordan and Spencer for letting me part of your tradition.  I had a great time and best of luck to all of you.

Best Silhouette Ever – Alice, Adam and Bella at Baker Beach

This was my second session with Alice, Adam and their little dog Bella. We met at Baker beach and had a great time (San Francisco is one seriously beautiful place). But the best part of the day was when I discovered how jealous Bella got each and every time Adam tried to hug Alice. Within moments of them having a “moment”, little Bella would start jumping all over them. And let me tell you, she has some serious hops. Nothing we could really do so we let her jump away. Have to say the silhouette shot of them hugging and Bella jumping is one of my all time favorites. Can’t ever plan for something like that, but when it does happen you just keep shooting. Love how extended Bella is.

Thanks again Alice and Todd. I had a great time and best of luck getting a moment without being tackled my Bella.

They are married!!! Hester, Daniel and Family after the Big Day.

This week I did two sessions with Hester and Daniel and Daniel’s mom and Dad, who were in town from Hong Kong for Daniel and Hester’s wedding. We were challenged a bit by the weather The first session was cut short due to the thick fogged that rolled in while we were at the Conservancy of Flowers in Golden Gate Park and when we went to Crissy Field a few days later, the wind was gusting at 50mph. Fortunately the entire family was wonderful and understanding. We explored around these San Francisco landmarks and had a great time. The session were capped off with a wonderful Golden Gate Bridge Sunset.

Congrats again Hester and Daniel on the wedding and thank for giving me the opportunity to work with you and your family.  Complete Gallery is here.
