Date Night Photography with Jocelyn and Glenn

Photography sessions in San Francisco always have a unique feel depending on the couple’s personality, where we are at, and of course the always interesting variable of the San Francisco weather.  This session ended up being special because the location was great (Yerba Buena Gardens) and the fall sunshine made for perfect weather.  The last aspect of the personality was determined by who was and wasn’t there.  Jocelyn and Glenn have been married for 14 years and it was great to see the love and the playfulness between the two of them.  And what made this session all the more was who wasn’t there – namely their two beautiful children.  This was a Date Night Photosession and we were out on the town for a few photos before their reservations and a local steak house.  But even after the 14 year span since their wedding, a doubling in size of their family, and a whole lot of pre-session gitters, they did awesome and we had a great time.  I’ve always said photography sessions make for great dates (especially for parents) and this was proven true again.  There were a few nervous laughs but we explored around the Contemporary Jewish Museum and started having fun.   By the time we crossed Mission and went to the Yerba Buena Gardens they were holding hands a bit more tightly and I could see the romance through the camera (always love that).  All in all it was a wonderful afternoon.  The photos turned out wonderful and from what I hear the steak dinner was equally fabulous so all in all they had a very good date.  Congrats Jocelyn and Glenn on not letting the day to day get in the way of having a great date.

Photos for a New San Francisco Family

I met the Mayer Family at their San Francisco home for a session with their newborn son.  He was (and is) super cute and we had a great time.  The little one didn’t fuss at all and even took a nap just about the time we needed him to. Best part was that they had done a wonderful job of decorating the baby’s room and it made a great backdrop for the photographs.   By far my favorite shots of these is the three of them just sitting on the couch and holding each other.  You absolutely can see the warmth and the love jumping out of the pictures.  Felt a bit like movie stars being photographed in their exclusive New York apartment.  Fortunately you don’t have to be famous to be loving parents or create beautiful family photographs.

Congrats Mayer Family and good luck as he gets bigger and bigger.

Marsh Family Portraits in the Presidio

I met Tamara, Phil an their little boy Maddox at their Presidio home for a family portrait session. With another cloudy San Francisco afternoon, the adults were all a little bummed and worried about the outcome. Fortunately, babies don’t let the little things like fog or sunshine get in their way of having a good time. Maddox smiled the entire time and set the perfect mood for family photographs.  Love seeing a happy baby that is content chewing on toys and clapping along with mom and dad.

Thanks Tamara and Phil for inviting me into your home and best wishes.

Photographs of the Wonderful Woolway Family

Last Month I had the joy of photographing the Woolway Family – Anne, Mark, Audrey and baby Henry.  And when you look through these photos, you’ll probably have the same question as I did when we first met in the Marina district home – “I see mom, Dad and Henry – now where is his big sister Audrey?”  Turns out Audrey is their little doggy and she is very much a member of the family.  Audrey is super cute and just great with Henry.  Seeing them all together, you have no doubt that Audrey was the original child and loved by all.  We got a few wonderful shots of Henry in the house (I love ones with him on the red airplane and in his pen of toys.  And since the Woolway’s had only recently moved back to San Francisco, we went out to the Golden Gate bridge to get a few classic San Francisco Photographs.

Thanks Anne and Mark  – welcome to back San Francisco and congrats with your beautiful baby.  Hugs and Kisses to Audrey.

Date idea for all the couples – doesn’t matter if you are engaged, just married or on double digit anniversaries

If you are like me and most of the people I know, your list of date ideas eventually run a little dry.  You go to dinner, movies, maybe a weekend trip or something of the like.  At some point you run out of ideas and end up making the rounds again.  If you have kids, well your brain cells are toast and your ability to come up with anything different is challenged to say the least.  No matter what the situation, coming up with memorable date ideas becomes a stretch for everyone at some point.

But here is the cool thing about photography – any moment can become memorable, even remarkable with a simple click of the shutter.  And its fun. You let me tag along with you and your hottie when you go for a walk in your favorite neighborhood, play on the beach, do anything that you normally do and you will get amazing photographs.  Not only that, your old flame will sprout up – no matter how long you have been married or been together.  It happens after every photo session.  People come in feeling awkward and nervous and they leave holding hands and laughing with each other.

Happens every time.

For your next date, hire me for a session.  She (or maybe he) gets dolled up (or maybe they don’t), we meet at someplace fun and we take photos for an hour or so.  You get huge brownies for a unique idea, photos that will last a lifetime, and you walk away with a smile on your face.

I even know a killer baby sitter if you need one.

So contact me next time you are searching for an interesting date.

P.S. And no I don’t do naked photos – this is a family business after all.

Celebrating 10 amazing years in San Francisco

I have to say this was one of my favorite shoots.  Normally I am asked to photograph the beginning of things – newborns, young families, engagements, weddings, etc.  But this time, I got to photograph a couple 10 years and a set of twins in the making.  Rick and Candice were celebrating their 10 year anniversary with a trip to San Francisco and contacted me for a photo session.  We took a walk along Aquatic Park and up and over the hill to Ft. Mason.  They were great and didn’t flinch even when the San Francisco fog rolled in that morning.  The day was gray but they kept smiling and we had a great time.  I loved working with a couple that had been married that long.  10 years is no easy task so I have to say super props to them.

Thanks Candice and Rick – I really appreciate you including me in your anniversary celebration.  Best of luck with the next 10 years.

Vu Family Photo Session – Rockstar Parents and Amazing Kids

After meeting Bill and Mai Vu, I have to bow down to their awesomeness as parents.  I’m sure they weren’t perfect but they sure did a fabulous job of raising 5 great kids.  All 5 are fun, good looking, intelligent and nice.  I have one 3 year old and its about all I can handle.  How they did so well with 5 is beyond my imagination.  They definitely reached rock star status in my eyes.

I met the Vu family at the Ferry Building in San Francisco for a family session and had a great time.  They pose well, laugh easily and are up for most anything. Basically they are a joy to photograph.

Thanks Vu family.  I had fun and it was wonderful to see your family in action.

Celebrating Big Changes with the Amazing Jones Family

I met the amazing Jones family at Baker Beach on a beautiful San Francisco afternoon.  Mom Kelly had corralled her boys (Dad Steve, Oldest son Justin and no so little one Jake).  Meeting with a photographer may not have been at the top of the list for the Jones boys but I can definitely understand why Kelly did the necessary arm twisting.  Turns out Justin is leaving for ASU in the fall so this is clearly a very special summer for the Jones Family.

Spend any time with the Jones’s and you will learn two things very quickly.  First they love each other and are really proud of one another.  And second, little Jake has an endless supply of energy.  I don’t think he stood still for more than about a second the entire time we on the beach.  Quite the site to see.

Thank you Jones family.  I had a great time and I hope you have a fabulous summer.

Cruising the Haight with Zane

This week, I followed Zane for a few blocks as he ate and drank his way around the Haight.  As one of the most iconic neighborhoods in all of San Francisco, Haight Street is known for its colorful personality (which applies the retail stores, architecture and people). It makes a great back drop for any family photography but I especially like it with children because they so often find the little things that make the street interesting. Plus there is something funny about seeing children chase their “pipe dreams” and stand in solidarity with Bob Marley.

Thanks again Zane and Caitlin and hope you enjoy the photos.

Caroline’s birthday and my one year anniversary

Wow, its been a year since Caroline’s last birthday.  She turned three and have a great party at the Fr Mason Art Center.  And while today was very important to her and her fabulous family  (Amy, Andrew and baby sister CeCe) for all the obvious reasons, it also has special meaning to me.   Caroline’s  party last year at Crissy Field was the first event I ever photographed as the official photographer.   I can absolutely remember calling Amy and being so nervous to ask if I could photograph the party.   I couldn’t believe she said yes and then sent out an email that said “our friend and professional photograper, Joey Chandler will be taking photos at the party”.    It’s definitely been quite a year.

Seeing Caroline’s friends and realizing that I have photos of almost everyone there was a treat. These families are now very much part of my life (I see their photos on my screen saver at least a few times a week) and its nice to know that a few of the photos I took are now part of their lives.

So thank you Caroline and Kvaal family.  Not only for being great in your own right but for also taking a chance on me.

Happy Birthday Caroline.  Thanks for inviting us – we had a great time.

Here are a few shots I took today – gotta love cupcakes and chocolate frosting:
