Abisia Family at Perry Farms

I met the Abisia family a few months back at Perry Farms in Hayward (about 30 miles south of San Francisco) and we had a great time.   Perry farms is an awesome place for picking pumpkins, learning about frontier living and generally having a great time.  In fact, my family is still enjoying the popcorn corn that we picked then.  Pretty awesome to put the whole cob in the microwave and watch it pop.  But we were there to take photos and it was great spot.  Pumpkins, hay bales, trees and wagons made for a great session.  Of course the Abisia’s were nothing but smiles and the photos came out great.  Loved how playful everyone was and that energy came through in the photographs.

We ended up printing several large canvas’s for their home and those look awesome.  Really love when my work makes a contribution to a family’s home.

Thanks again Abisia Family and I look forward to seeing you again.

Surprise Engagement Photographs on the San Francisco to Sausalito Ferry

“Yes!  Yes!  Yes!”

Those words were said twice in the past week.  The first time when Creighton called me to see if I would be interested in photographing him as he proposes to his girlfriend.  I responded with the multiple “Yes’s” since this was something that I have been wanting to do for several years.  I’ve done lots of engagement sessions in San Francisco but never an actual, in the moment, engagement session.  Creighton’s plan was perfect.  He told Julia that they were going on a hot date complete with a ferry ride from San Francisco to Sausalito and dinner at Caballa point.  (Take note if you are ever planning to do a surprise photography session for a girlfriend or wife.  Make sure you give her a reason to dress up – this was very smart on Creighton’s part.)  Just as we were pulling out, I approached them as planned and pretended to be a boat photographer.  I took their photo and as Julia started to pull away and walk towards the warmth of the cabin, Creighton pulled her in close and whispered something.  I kept shooting as she went through a slew of emotions – confusion, surprise, excitement, glee – as Creighton talked to her and then got down on one knee.  The boat crowd cheered as he slipped the ring on her finger and she said her “Yes’s”.  So much fun.  They called their family from the ferry and once we landed in Sausalito we walked around for a few more photos.  All in all a very well executed plan and a great way to start their life together.

Well done Creighton and Congrats Julia.  Can’t wait to see what plans you cook up for the wedding.

Date Night Photography with Jocelyn and Glenn

Photography sessions in San Francisco always have a unique feel depending on the couple’s personality, where we are at, and of course the always interesting variable of the San Francisco weather.  This session ended up being special because the location was great (Yerba Buena Gardens) and the fall sunshine made for perfect weather.  The last aspect of the personality was determined by who was and wasn’t there.  Jocelyn and Glenn have been married for 14 years and it was great to see the love and the playfulness between the two of them.  And what made this session all the more was who wasn’t there – namely their two beautiful children.  This was a Date Night Photosession and we were out on the town for a few photos before their reservations and a local steak house.  But even after the 14 year span since their wedding, a doubling in size of their family, and a whole lot of pre-session gitters, they did awesome and we had a great time.  I’ve always said photography sessions make for great dates (especially for parents) and this was proven true again.  There were a few nervous laughs but we explored around the Contemporary Jewish Museum and started having fun.   By the time we crossed Mission and went to the Yerba Buena Gardens they were holding hands a bit more tightly and I could see the romance through the camera (always love that).  All in all it was a wonderful afternoon.  The photos turned out wonderful and from what I hear the steak dinner was equally fabulous so all in all they had a very good date.  Congrats Jocelyn and Glenn on not letting the day to day get in the way of having a great date.

Photos for a New San Francisco Family

I met the Mayer Family at their San Francisco home for a session with their newborn son.  He was (and is) super cute and we had a great time.  The little one didn’t fuss at all and even took a nap just about the time we needed him to. Best part was that they had done a wonderful job of decorating the baby’s room and it made a great backdrop for the photographs.   By far my favorite shots of these is the three of them just sitting on the couch and holding each other.  You absolutely can see the warmth and the love jumping out of the pictures.  Felt a bit like movie stars being photographed in their exclusive New York apartment.  Fortunately you don’t have to be famous to be loving parents or create beautiful family photographs.

Congrats Mayer Family and good luck as he gets bigger and bigger.

Muni Station & Playground – perfect place for family photos

I got an email the other day that sounded perfect.  Not word for word, but the gist was “we have a crazy active two year old that loves the playground and trains.  We want family photographs.  Can you help us?”  ”For sure” I said and we set up a family portrait session at their San Francisco home.  And when I met Sara, Steve and little Rex at their San Francisco home I was ready to run but I had no idea how cute Rex was.  I walked in just as he was putting on his shoes and the doorway was just lit up by his big blue eyes and beautiful smile.  I grabbed my camera immediately and even before I said hello, I took a few shots that turned out to be some of the best child photographs that I have ever taken.  Probably could have left after 5 minutes but I figured that wouldn’t have been nice.  Rex was all fired up and lead us directly to the playground .   I chased him around the swings, slides and see-saws and we got some really nice photographs of him and the family in action.  Then we piled into the car and drove over to Rex’s home away from home – the West Portal Muni Station.  So much fun seeing him point out the buses and muni trains.  Nothing like the excitement of a two year old when he sees a train go by.

Thanks Sara, Steve and Rex.  I had a great time.  Good luck keeping up with the little one.  I’m sure he is only going to get faster and faster.

Family Portrait – San Francisco – Weber Family

For the longest time, I have said that photography is absolutely one of the best presents to give someone for their birthday, Christmas or the appropriate father or mother’s Day.  Not only do you have a wonderful few hours together as family, but you then have something that will literally last a lifetime.  So I got super excited when I heard this family session was a birthday gift for dad.  The Weber’s have spent the last year in San Francisco and are gearing up for a move back to Vancouver in a month or so.  We chose to do the session in Golden Gate Park and picked two great locations – the AIDS Memorial Grove and the Carousel at the Children’s Playground.  The children were awesome – so full and energy with great big smiles.  Loved seeing the little one work so hard to keep up with his big sister.  And since this was a birthday gift for dad, I focused on getting a few shots of him and the kids.  The shots of them kissing him are just precious ad I hope will bring smiles for many years to come.

Thanks Weber Family and good luck in your move.

San Francisco Family Portrait – Sewell Family

This was an absolutely beautiful portrait session with a wonderful San Francisco family.  Best part was that it was along a path in the Presidio that I had never seen eventhough I have driven by it literally thousands of time.  I met the Sewell Family just inside the Presidio Gate with the intention of photographing them along Lover’s Lane.  We talked a bit and they asked me if I had seen “Wood Line” – one of the environment structures done by Andy Goldsworthy in the Presidio.  I had heard of it but had never seen it.  Woodline is a log snake meanders along a path nestled in the tall Eucalyptus and is a perfect place  place for children to play.  Plus the way the light falls through the tall trees gives the place a magical feeling.  It would make an ideal place for anyone needing to get away from the hustle and bustle of San Francisco or something a little more romantic like a walk with a special person or maybe a place to get engaged.  I’ve seen lots of amazing places in San Francisco while doing family photographs  but I have to say that this was one of the most special.  It’s just a great place and definitely worth a visit.

The Sewell Family are great with three beautiful and rambunctious children.  After a few family photographs, they started asking “Can we run?  Can we play?”  The amazing trees, the great San Francisco light, and the Sewell’s wonderful energy made for a great family session.

Here are a few samples.  Please vote on your favorite as I give away an extra print for the most popular.

Rockon with Groupon – ways for photographers to manage client concerns

I recently purchased a coupon from Living Social for a boot camp here in San Francisco.  I was one of about 600 people that thought getting up early to have someone yell “do more push-ups” sounded like a good idea.  But after I purchased it and began to think about the offer, I got worried.  All sorts of thoughts about “do they have the room” and “are there enough instructors” began racing through my head.  The next morning, rather then being excited about getting an amazing deal with what I’m assuming is a great company, I woke up with visions of hundreds of people showing up for our first class and over running the bootcamp.

That got me thinking that beyond the process of managing all of the business and selling products, photographers (and other businesses) need to  really think about the concerns and fears of their clients if they want to have a successful groupon.  Avoid this and they run the risk of off putting off clients the moment they purchase the groupon.

To point out ways to better manage those customer fears, here are three companies that recently used a daily deal site.

Ultra-Spective Photography Studio, Livermore, CA

Ultra Spective ran a groupon offering a 30-minute on-location or in-studio portrait session, plus a choice of a three-sheet prints package of one image (one 8”x10”, two 5”x7”, and 8 wallets) or one high-resolution image on disc for $55 ($345 value).  A solid deal that is appealing without giving away too much in terms of product or processing time.  They ended up selling 150 sessions which feels like a good number for groupon sessions.  But where Ultra Spective excelled was in their Groupon FAQ Post .  US went out of their way to address just about any concern that client might have.

  • Basics – where, when, how long and how many people.  US limited the sessions to 30 minutes in 4 different locations.  Smart for them and clear to the clients.
  • How clients would view and purchase their photos – great way to set up client expectations about purchasing additional photos.
  • Staffing – they address the “can they pull this off?” client concern by saying they have brough on additional staff.  I felt great about that purchase and I didn’t even buy one.
  • Additional questions – love this line “We have cleared our calendar to answer your questions and book your session as soon as you’re ready.  We believe in amazing customer service so be prepared to receive!”  Clearly the US staff thought about their client experience and took the steps to guarantee to make sure everything went well.

And I did hear from Anna Vickroy, Ultra-Spective photography Director and Photographer – “The groupon has been an amazing success for us.  We did a lot of research before running our groupon including getting advice from PPA through their Studio Management Program.  Keys for us were to only provide one image, have a trained staff already in place and have a sales plan with an agressive up-sale strategy that requires in-person sale appointments.”

Karina Marie Diaz Photography, San Francisco, CA

Karina did a wildly successful groupon – $99 for a 45-minute ladies’ boudoir photo session, including a web gallery and two prints (a $545 value).  Her work is amazing and that clearly resonated with her clients as she sold almost 1500 sessions.  Logistically she is set up well as all the shoots are done at her studio and she put in a short deadline (8/1) so she ensured that she wouldn’t be doing the groupons forever.

When I first saw her offering and those numbers I thought “that is crazy – another groupon blow up.  Who can do 1500 sessions that fast?” But from what I gather from her yelp reviews and from some people I know that are familiar with the deal, she planned for these numbers and brought on a team of people to help her manage everything.  So while I’m sure she is very, very busy, with a team of people, that 1500 goes from being impossible to simply challenging.  Definitely applaud her for that.

I don’t know if her clients got worried about doing all those sessions but I imagine that a few did.  I think she could have alleviated any potential problems by simply mentioning  ”I have a team” like Ultra-Spective did.  Plus, Since she is sure to have a ton of upsell, I think a statement about the sales process would have helped as well.   Lessoned learn on this – let it be known that you have a great team.   And if you don’t have a team – get one.

Start Fitness, San Francisco, CA

This is the boot camp deal from Living Social that I purchased last week.   And while risking the additional attention/wrath  of the coaches when I finally do start the bootcamp, I wanted to point out a couple things that I think would have reduced the concerns that I had.

  • How are they going to handle the additional 600 clients – from their home page their SF location “runs from 0600-0700 (6a-7a) Monday through Friday” an “all classes are 60 minutes.”  Because there wasn’t a special Living Social FAQ page, this was all I had to reference.  My brain naturally went to “how will 600 people all fit into one place?” and “man – 600 people will be really smelly.”  Now this maybe completely handled from their perspective (after all not all 600 people will show up on the same day) but since that wasn’t 100% clear to me I started to get concerned and apprehensive about my purchase.
  • FAQ Page – can not be stated enough.  If you are going to do a daily deal – have a FAQ page and make it prominent.  My only feedback for Ultra-Spective is that I think they should keep their “groupon deal” button on their main website.   Because there was no FAQ on Start Fitness’s website when I purchased the coupon, I had to search around and try to determine what will happen.  This makes me wonder if they can provide there normal level of exceptional service.

I haven’t started started with Start Fitness yet so these concerns may not be warranted.  I hope not of course and given that they have been in business so long, the logical part of my brain tells me not to worry.  But with so much hype around businesses being over whelmed by ill-planned daily deals, the non-logical part of my brain can’t help but worry.

(Follow up – Start fitness is awesome.  The best and most inspiring boot camp I’ve ever been to.  Very glad I did this.)

Lessons learned from these – not only think about the processes once your clients enter your doors, but also think about how they will perceive your business the moment they purchase their groupon or daily deal.  Once again, for me, Groupon is a great opportunity but it requires some serious thought and planning.

Please leave your comments – what else should people plan for when doing a daily deal?

And if you are a child, family or wedding photographer looking for more groupon information, you might like my other post about my groupon experience.

Marsh Family Portraits in the Presidio

I met Tamara, Phil an their little boy Maddox at their Presidio home for a family portrait session. With another cloudy San Francisco afternoon, the adults were all a little bummed and worried about the outcome. Fortunately, babies don’t let the little things like fog or sunshine get in their way of having a good time. Maddox smiled the entire time and set the perfect mood for family photographs.  Love seeing a happy baby that is content chewing on toys and clapping along with mom and dad.

Thanks Tamara and Phil for inviting me into your home and best wishes.

Chandler/Talwatte Family Portraits

I’ve been friends with Surindha and Linda for almost 10 years now.  They are two of the nicest people you’ll meet.  Plus they are fabulous cooks and they have three amazing kids.  No idea how they manage to keep it all together but they clearly know what they are doing.  We went to Piedmont Park in Piedmont and had a great time.  Once everyone got over their initial nerves we captured some really nice photographs.  I always love it when children go from “No, No, No – I don’t want my picture taken” to “Joey, Joey, Joey – I found another spot for a picture.”

Thank you Surindha and Linda.  A great time as always and I can’t wait until the next dinner club.
