This is the only photo I’m going to show from this session. This is a family from San Rafael and when I took this, the husband was in the last few weeks of life. He had been battling some sort of brain tumor for a very long time and this was the end. An absolutely beautiful family that was going through a very tough time. The session wasn’t easy. Was wavering back and forth between treating him like any other dad or someone that one really sick. I went for it figuring that he was tired of people being cautious around him. This shot is from a moment when the kids were in the house and we were waiting for them. I started taking pictures and they were a little stiff. I asked him to tell her “why he loved her”. Maybe that was too much. I don’t know. But there was a moment where he looked at her and let out a couple tears. The words didn’t come but I think she got it. They squeezed each other just a bit more and I got this photo.
He passed away three weeks later. And while I’m sure they would have preferred to have family photographs without Dad in a wheel chair, I’m also very sure that they are happy to have the ones we got. Definitely reminded me that we really can’t take our time on this go-around for granted.
I wish the family the very best.
